Deep Tissue Massage, also known as Bodywork, is a structural approach that helps to alter and free up the body's shape, alignment and structure in order to improve the body's functions. Using deep manipulation tehniques of the soft tissue, we can address postural problems, movement restrictions, lack of flexibility, physical results of stress and tension and somato-emotional problems. The term Bodywork has now become synonymous with any "hands on" therapy performed on a client's body. However, the original term was first used to describe Deep Tissue Therapy and actually refers to the way therapists use their own body weight performing the deep tissue movements. Because DTM has its origins in Rolfing, which was considered to be very painful, many people still think DTM is painful. This is a myth. DTM therapists agree that painful work is usually counterproductive. There is a "good pain" that clients refer to a being acceptable and helpful, but this type of discomfort does not surpass the client's level of pain tolerance. Much like a sculptor working with clay, DTM therapists work with the body's malleable fascia, lengthening and reshaping it and releasing restrictions.
